Scott Berry is in need of a kidney transplant and needs the support of community and friends to help offset the life-saving medications and kidney related expenses for Scott, and living donor expenses for his brother David.
About 20 years ago, Scott was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy which is an autoimmune disease of the kidney. IgA damage can be slowed over time with the use of medications although it is not curable. The end result is kidney failure, requiring a life-saving kidney transplant.
Scott’s youngest brother David will be donating one of his kidneys to Scott at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Even with insurance, funding this life saving procedure is a monumental task, as there will be and are many lifelong medical expenses and treatments not covered by insurance: co-pays, anti-rejection medications, ongoing lab fees, transportation costs, costs associated with live donation and more.
To help with the financial burden of Scott’s uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in his honor has been established with HelpHOPELive, a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to patients and their families for more than 30 years. All donations are tax-deductible, are held by HelpHOPELive in the Southeast Kidney Transplant Fund, and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Please consider making a contribution.
Thank you for your prayers, support and generosity. Please know that your contribution counts. On behalf of Scott, David and the entire Berry family, we thank you in advance for your kind consideration.
Gratefully,
The Berry Family
I want to thank all who have checked in how the Kidney transplant has gone. Having had the transplant 1 month ago today I wanted to let you know how things have progressed. First off David who donated his glorious kidney has done great in his recovery and departed yesterday to head back to Colorado and be with his family. David is looking forward to again spending time with his family and getting his life back to normal. It has been great spending time with him and sharing this journey with him! The new kidney is working magnificently and acclimated to its new home. The recovery process continues with my many weekly visits to the Mayo for follow up blood work, adjusting of medications, and doctor meetings. The experience at the Mayo has been fantastic in all aspects and we are truly blessed to have such a great hospital near us. It is amazing that much of my blood work changed overnight after the kidney became acclimated and functioning. Now is the time for me to continue to rest and recover which I have a very difficult time doing. Thankfully my wife (caregiver in this process) and doctors have forced me to slow down and really recover. Things are going really well and I am thankful for all you who have reached out to both David and I throughout this process. It has been a true blessing and an uplifting experience having had all your prayers and various ways of support. THANK YOU!
First day of post-transplant followup in the books!! Scott had a successful visit at the Mayo yesterday and the kidney is very happy in its new home. We will be making trips to the Mayo 4-5 times a week for the next month to closely monitor the kidney's function. Please keep us in your prayers for continued success.
Happy Friday! What a difference three days makes...Scott was discharged yesterday at about 4:00pm - 48 hours after he left the operating room! Amazing!! David's kidney is working so incredibly well that they released Scott one day early. Both brothers are resting comfortably and starting their roads to recovery.
Amazing news...David has been discharged and is now recovering in the relaxing Berry beach condo! Thank you again to David for giving Scott the Gift of Life!!
HAPPY Wednesday morning! Scott's surgery went extremely well late yesterday afternoon and both brothers are slowly recovering after a very long, successful day. David's kidney is working wonderfully for Scott and is adjusting very well in its new home. What an amazing Gift of Life! Thank you God, David, Family and Friends!!
Wonderful news...David's surgery went well and he is in recovery! Scott is being prepped and actual surgery will start around 2:00. Both surgeons said that David's kidney is beautiful! So very blessed for this amazing gift of life. Please keep the prayers coming for a successful transfer to Scott. Love to all!!
I wanted to thank all of the people who have reached out with words of support and prayers! Your kind words of encouragement have certainly been uplifting. A special thank you to my youngest brother David who is flying in to give me this amazing gift of life. As our journey continues, we will provide updates via this site. April 12th, here we come!
