Kendra Beadle was born twenty-six years ago in Jamaica. Kendra traveled to the U.S. on a student visa --- first graduating from Smith College and then on to the University of Delaware as a PhD candidate in Chemical Engineering. On June 29, 2006, Kendra fell three stories, injuring her spine from her second cervical vertebrae to her seventh thoracic vertebrae. Her cervical vertebrae’s were fused, but she suffered a complete spinal cord injury at the seventh thoracic vertebrae. This is at the mid-chest level. Kendra had limited student insurance that has long since been exhausted.
Kendra is anxious to return to the academic challenges at the University. Ultimately, it will be difficult for her to return to Jamaica because of accessibility issues. Kendra needs so much just to get going. She needs a new wheelchair, coverage for equipment, prescriptions and medical supplies like catheters. She needs to continue with her physical therapy and she could use an aide to help her get into the shower that is not handicap friendly. Kendra drives a small sedan that means she will need to dismantle and reassemble her wheelchair each time she gets in and out of her car. An accessible van is a huge expense but would ease her transportation issues considerably. The list goes on and on.
To assist with the immense challenge of financing uninsured therapies and injury-related expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established with the HelpHOPELive Catastrophic Injury Program. HelpHOPELive is a nonprofit organization that assists people who have experienced catastrophic injuries. All contributions are administrated by HelpHOPELive exclusively for injury-related expenses. Donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
