On Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at the Manasquan, N.J. shore, while surfing with three close friends, Richard Travia encountered a wave that drove Travia, a strong swimmer, head first into the the ocean floor—breaking his neck.
Travia sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) to his C4 and C5 vertebrae. Nearly two years later, despite his injury, Travia remains strong and in good spirits.
“Although quadriplegia has changed my life,” said Travia, “I am excited about moving forward with my career, girlfriend, family and friends.”
Travia goes to physical therapy twice a week, continues to work full time as a hedge fund analyst for Tradex Global Advisors, LLC, and volunteers his time at grade schools to spread SCI awareness and speak about the power of perseverance and the importance of water sports safety.
Travia continues to fundraise with NTAF for his uninsured medical expenses such as: home modifications, travel expenses, rehabilitation equipment, customized beds and chairs, personal aides, and a van.
Travia recently passed his road test in New Jersey, and plans to be on the road driving in a modified van by summer.
