NTAF Transplant Patient Wins The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's
'2009 Woman of the Year' Competition After Raising Thousands for Leukemia Research

Dani Shotel Greene, of the NTAF Bone Marrow Transplant Fund, has been extremely busy the past few months fundraising for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2009 Woman of the Year Competition. With the help of her husband, Scott, and a deeply dedicated support system (Team Promise), Dani was able to raise more than $50,000 throughout the 10-week competition to benefit the Society’s D.C. Chapter!

For the second year in a row, Dani and the members of Team Promise raised more money for the D.C. Chapter than any other chapter in the country. As a result, a research grant for leukemia has been named in Dani’s honor.

“As a group of 21 candidates, a record $890,000 was raised,” wrote Scott. “Thank you to all who attended one of our events, made a donation or encouraged us in the past 10-plus weeks … and thank you so much to Team Promise members.”
Dani is a survivor of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML)— thanks to a bone marrow transplant in 2003, made possible by an unrelated bone marrow donor from Germany and the generosity of family, friends and neighbors who contributed to Dani’s NTAF fundraising campaign to help pay for the myriad of uninsured expenses related to her transplant.

Dani's family published a book in spring 2008, “It’s Good to Know a Miracle: Dani’s Story,” chronicling her battle with AML. The book contains a wealth of information about leukemia, as well as stories from Dani’s personal battle with cancer, compiled from family logs that were kept throughout the course of her treatment. The logs span the time from Dani’s diagnosis on September 11, 2002, until her release from Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in May 2003.

Dani's parents Jay and Sue Shotel (in the photo below) joined NTAF at our annual Community Heroes Luncheon in April 2008 to promote the book, and help NTAF raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donors.  At the event NTAF registered 72 potential bone marrow donors to the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry.  To date, NTAF has registered more than 300 potential donors to the NMDP Registry.
